WHY TEACHER TRAINING @ KNUTSFORD?

Why choose Teacher Training @ Knutsford?

Teacher Training & Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Teacher Training @ Knutsford is a school led teacher-training programme developed in partnership between Knutsford Academy (The Learning Alliance) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Knutsford Academy is the Lead School for this programme and we are complemented and supported by leading schools in the region for additional home school placements. Our leading edge provision leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which is developed and assessed through the teaching experience at the trainee’s home school and supplemented by the alternate placement. Formal and informal feedback on teaching is provided regularly, and support is provided in tracking progress and designing lessons.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education

The award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is combined with the award of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Some school-based courses do not offer the Postgraduate Certificate in Education element, relying solely on the award of QTS. We believe that the PGCE is a critical element of the course since an understanding and application of educational theory, combined with practical experience and understanding, can accelerate learning as well as, of course, the professional development of a trainee. We are very aware that we are developing educational leaders for the future and wish to equip our trainees with the foundation to achieve excellence and the potential for progression.

Small Group Tutorials & Support

LJMU Liaison Tutors support trainee development throughout the year. In each school, trainees benefit from the support from a Professional Mentor and a Subject Mentor, who provide personalised and bespoke feedback and support for improvement. Subject Pedagogy tutorials take place online and at LJMU as part of the Professional Studies Programme.

School & University Experience in a School

Teacher Training @ Knutsford is a combination of school based teaching experience with a university-facilitated professional studies programme delivered at Knutsford Academy rather than at the University itself. This is, in many ways, beneficial to our trainees since University lecturers and school–based leaders and specialists deliver side by side, enabling trainees to hear about current practice in schools, and underpinning practice with educational theory. The Professional Studies lecture and seminar programme delivered at Knutsford Academy is the core part of the PGCE element of our programme. Our training programme develops outstanding and inspirational teachers with an in-depth knowledge and understanding in delivering excellence in teaching and learning.

Our Partnership, Qualifications & Financial Bursaries

Our partnership with schools across South Manchester and Cheshire offers the flexibility to train in schools in a number of locations. Bursaries of up to £24,000 (subject dependent) are available dependent on  degree classification.  This is a year long programme that leads to the qualification of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Programme overview

Our programme commences at the beginning of September 2021. It begins with a week-long intoduction at school followed by an online Induction with LJMU, which prepares trainees to start their training.

Trainees are based in their home schools from Monday to Thursday and follow a Professional Studies Programme on Fridays. The programme comprises four days class contact, with one professional training day each week, all of which take place in the school setting.

Our Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) provides an in-depth training programme, focused on delivering the skills, knowledge and attributes needed when embarking on your teaching career. Our training and professional studies programmes focus on meeting the Teaching Standards and Qualified Teacher Status.

The Professional Studies programme is delivered predominantly at the Knutsford Academy site supported by online learning and University based sessions where appropriate. The programme covers all the knowledge and understanding trainees need to prepare for a successful career in teaching.

Practising School Leaders give an insight into day to day life in a school with key note talks on safeguarding, managing data, managing behaviour, making successful job applications, and supporting Vulnerable Students.

LJMU colleagues provide key lectures on key educational theories and pedagogical research and providing a context for assignments.

Our post graduate programme supports the development of a high degree of:
* Critical understanding of education theory and practice relevant to the subject area
* Reflective practice linked to professional development
* Practitioner research skills for effective teaching and learning
* Deep understanding and application of subject knowledge

Placements
Trainees are assigned to one of the schools in the Partnership as a Home School to undertake a teaching placement. A short, alternate placement may be offered later in the year, if the current pandemic situation allows.

Trainee Support

We provide support to all our trainees, along with guidance and advice necessary to become an outstanding professional

  • the Head of Programme based at Knutsford Academy
  • a Liaison Tutor who will visit in placement for tutorials and lesson observations and lead group subject sessions, usually weekly.  The tutor will also work closely to support and provide a link between the programme and the Mentor Coaches in our partner schools
  • individual Subject Mentors at each placement school for everyday mentoring
  • a Professional Mentor at each placement school
  • Liverpool John Moores University tutors and external professional leaders for the academic modules

Liverpool John Moores University

The University offers advice through its Student Services team on finances such as access to hardship loans, Careers Guidance, help finding somewhere to live, or a confidential one-on-one with a qualified counsellor.

Support is available for students with a disability or specific learning difficulty (SpLD) e.g. dyslexia, provided through the University’s Inclusive Services team who have highly experienced staff members.

In addition, there’s an impressive Library Service available to ensure all students get the best out of the extensive information resources and excellent learning facilities.

BURSARIES AND FUNDING

Bursaries and Funding

You could get up to £24,000 tax-free while you train. Your eligibility for financial support, and the amount you can expect to receive, will depend on the subject you choose to teach and your degree classification, or highest relevant academic qualification. If your degree isn’t in the subject you wish to teach, you may be eligible for a funded online course, in order to increase your subject knowledge before starting your training.

Please go to the ‘Get into Teaching’ website to find out your eligibility for a bursary. You don’t need to apply for a bursary – if you are enrolled on a non-salaried postgraduate course and meet the eligibility criteria, you will begin receiving payments automatically by your chosen teacher training provider. You will receive more information on the arrangements and how this is distributed, prior to the start of your course.

Training places have tuition fees of £9,250. UK and EU student teachers are normally be eligible to apply for a student loan to pay the cost of the tuition fees which is available through Student Finance England.  Please search on Student Loan Company to assess your eligibility for a student loan.
